Protein Synthesis Introductory Activities

DNA is found in the nucleus of all cells, it controls the activities of the cell.

But how does it do this?

DNA controls the production of protein in the cell. The genes are like recipes for each protein.

Watch this short animation showing how the DNA provides the instructions for proten making in the cell;

Complete the two introductory sheets;

  1. Protein synthesis 1

Extension work

Once you have understood these basics, it is mind-boggling to imagine that in every cell there are 1000s of genes controling the activity of that particular cell. Each specialized cell switches off any genes that are not needed for its special function. Biologists are now able to track this activity using micro-arrays.

Read the following worksheet and try to answer the questions.

Micro-arrays and switching off genes.
