The Reflex Arc

Step of the reflex arc;

  1. stimulus is received by _________________
  2. impulse is passed to a _____________ neurone.
  3. sensory neurone carries the nerve impulse to the CNS ( ___________ or ____)
  4. The CNS co-ordinates the “RESPONSE”
  5. a nerve _ _ _ _ _ _ _  is carried along a motor neurone to a _ _ _ _ _ _ or a gland.
  6. The effector produces the response.

Two examples of Spinal Reflexes are;   ___________________ &   ___________________

Why have reflexes?

Reflexes are automatic and very fast.  They often help the survival of an organism.

If you can modify your reflexes, you have an even better chance of survival.  This is called Learning.

Cranial Reflexes are found in the head; eg. blinking reflex and the pupil reflex. (brain death test)

Spinal Reflexes are the knee jerk reflex, or heat withdrawal reflex.

The Herring Breuer reflex is very important and stops over inflation of the lungs.Describe the steps in this reflex using these headings;
  1. stimulus,
  2. receptor,
  3. co-ordinator,
  4. effector,
  5. response.
