IB Biology - Planning Experiment. -
This is an experiment to assess Planning (b) and prepare you for planning (a)
The Optimum pH of the enzyme Catalase (Topics 5)
Aim
To design an experiment to find the optimum pH of the enzyme catalase.
Hypothesis
Hints:
You must explain using biological theory what you predict will happen. (with
enzymes you must mention active sites, lock and key hypothesis, etc (See Web
Links or your text book)
Also include references to any web or text source.
Variables
Hints:
You must plan a "fair test". There is always more than one
variable which will speed up or slow down your reaction, e.g. temperature,
surface area of solid, stirring, concentration of solutions, pH, volumes, etc.
You must keep all these other variables the same.
But most of all you have to show the examiner that you
have planned to do this.
- List the variables which could alter the results
- Say how you will control each one.
Apparatus
A list of apparatus or a diagram is needed.
Method
A realistic method to collect enough data is needed.
Don't collect data you are not going to use in the analysis.
