The Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

- Found in the cytoplasm of most eukaryotic cells,
unattached to nucleus
- The size is variable depending on the cell and it’s
function
- Its function is the synthesis and transport of some
lipids and steroids and the storage and release of calcium in skeletal
muscle cells.
- Contain enzymes that play a large role in the
detoxifying (making harmless) of poisonous organic molecules. (ie drugs)
- The structure of the SER increases the surface area
for reactions, synthesis and storage. It is believed that in 1ml of liver
tissue there is around 11m2 of SER.
