· They
have a double outer membrane- smooth and freely permeable to molecules.
· Elaborate system of
membranes inside the chloroplast that provides a large surface area for housing
chlorophyll pigments (chemicals of photosynthesis) - the disc shaped membranes
that house the chlorophyll are called thylakoids which are stacked into grana.
· The fluid surrounding the
grana is called the stroma.
· Chloroplasts have their own
DNA and ribosomes and therefore they can produce their own proteins.
