·        They are small self-contained, temporary compartments of membrane inside the cytoplasm.

 

·        They are bound by a single membrane

 

·        They are used to store and transport material around the cell.

 

·        They are formed from other membranes around the cell, (such as the rough ER), and break away, transporting their goods to other membranes and fusing to them.

 

·       They transport useful goods such as secretory or digestive materials, as well as enzymes, which may damage the cytoplasm if they were released.
